Let’s (re)discover together who the Cool Cats are! This NFT project was one of the most intriguing (and one of the most popular) in the market. After its launch in July 2021, it quickly climbed to the top ranks of the best collections in terms of trading volume on Opensea, securing third place behind BAYC and CryptoPunks. Although the collection has since seen a significant decline, it remains one of the most popular PFP (profile picture) series to date. In 2022, the total value of all tokens in circulation (market cap) was often assessed at over $200 million. The project was supported by an active and dynamic community. What are Cool Cats?

Like other so-called “collectible” image projects, Cool Cats is a collection of 9,999 NFTs randomly generated on the Ethereum blockchain. Similar to its predecessors, such as CryptoPunks, each Cool Cat NFT features a variety of traits including different clothing, facial expressions, mouths, hats, glasses, and more. In total, there are over 300,000 possible combinations. Of course, not all Cool Cats are created equal. Due to the combinations of certain traits, which vary in frequency, some are much rarer—or cooler—than others.

Cool Cats have been classified into eight tiers of rarity levels. Rarity is partially determined by these tiers, but there are also specific rarities for certain traits or combinations (e.g., a Cool Cat in a frog costume). Ultimately, half of the Cool Cats feature a “Cool” trait (Cool 1 or Cool 2). As shown in the table below, derived from the official guide, some NFTs are indeed rarer than others. That being said, any member of the Cool Cats community will gladly tell you that, regardless of rarity, their NFT is the coolest of them all.

Who created the Cool Cats?

The original team behind Cool Cats consists of four individuals:

In an interview with Catster, Colin Egan explains how the idea for the project originated:

The Cool Cats are derivatives of Blue Cat, the character that Colin Egan drew in high school. According to the Cool Cats Medium blog, the illustrator spent years perfecting the thickness of the lines, the height of the ears, and the length of Blue Cat’s whiskers to finally give him his undeniably cool and cute final form. The team, which self-identifies as “crypto-loving nerds, art enthusiasts, and creators of cool stuff,” launched the Cool Cats NFTs in PFP (Picture for Profile) format on July 1, 2021.

The arrival of Stephen Teglas in 2022 followed by the transition to creative leadership in 2023.

In 2022, Stephen Teglas was appointed CEO of Cool Cats, marking a key milestone in the project’s evolution. Teglas, an experienced leader with a long background at entertainment giants such as Disney and Warner Bros, was recruited to bring more formal structure and rigorous management to Cool Cats. His arrival aimed to support the project’s growth and optimize internal operations while exploring strategic collaborations to expand the brand’s reach. Under his leadership, Cool Cats strengthened its position in the NFT market, notably through key partnerships with companies in the Web3 space, such as Animoca Brands and Futureverse. This transitional period, under Teglas’s leadership, laid the groundwork for future projects and collaborations. However, in 2023—likely due to the unfavorable context—Stephen Teglas made the decision to step down from his position. Thus, in August 2023, Clon (Colin Egan), the creator and founder of Cool Cats, took the reins. He now oversees not only the creative aspects but also the overall strategy of the project. Additionally, the team expanded in 2023 with the addition of new members to the community council. Why have Cool Cats NFTs become so popular?

The Cool Cats collection hit the market shortly after the success of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC). While the summer of 2021 saw BAYC catalyze the rise of PFP (Picture for Profile) NFTs, Cool Cats managed to capture the attention of enthusiasts of these digital avatars. Its launch quickly generated excitement.

Initially, the Cool Cats NFTs were offered at 0.06 ETH each (approximately $150 at the time). However, sales stagnated, with only 300 units sold. In response to this situation and the declining value of cryptocurrencies, the team decided to reduce the price to 0.02 ETH (around $50). In just eight hours, the entire collection sold out. In the days that followed, the project experienced a significant surge, with prices quickly reaching 0.66 ETH (multiplied by 33, or approximately $1,000) per NFT.

The meteoric success of Cool Cats is largely attributed to celebrity endorsements. Mike Tyson, a boxing legend, was one of the first personalities to adopt a Cool Cat as his profile picture on Twitter, thereby enhancing the project’s visibility. What does the collection offer to its community?

Shortly after its launch, “We like the Cats” became the iconic slogan of the collection, embodying the friendly and community-driven spirit surrounding Cool Cats.

Additionally, Cooltopia, launched in 2022 as an immersive community space aligned with the metaverse and play-to-earn trends, aimed to allow users to participate in gamified quests. This virtual world, designed to enhance engagement among NFT holders, featured gaming mechanics where users could earn $MILK tokens and other rewards while navigating an interactive ecosystem. After attracting a number of players and collectors, the $MILK token was officially discontinued on July 27, 2023.

Journeys, Fractures, and the Cool Score represented ambitious gamification initiatives within the Cool Cats ecosystem, aimed at engaging NFT holders while expanding the universe of Cooltopia. These programs, organized in the form of seasons and episodes (Journeys), facilitated a progressive and interactive immersion into gamified stories.

Journeys: Immersion and Gamification in Seasons

Journeys are interactive narrative missions divided into several episodes within a season, each lasting approximately two weeks. Each episode, known as a Journey, presented Cool Cats and Cool Pets holders with challenges in the form of puzzles, riddles, and quests to complete. These activities allowed participants to evolve their NFTs and earn specific rewards.

Season 1: Fractures (February - April 2023)
The first season of Journeys, launched on February 9, 2023, included five episodes running until April 20, 2023. Holders of Cool Cats and Cool Pets received 11,575 Fracture NFTs, which served as entry tickets to participate in these missions. Each Fracture was a dynamic NFT that evolved throughout the missions, offering rare traits based on player performance and their Journey Score. It is important to note that these Fractures needed to be burned before May 19, 2023, to be converted into Shadow Wolves; after this date, they would have no further utility.

However, after this date, no new season or missions were announced, signaling a pause or potential redirection for the project.

Fractures: Dynamic and Evolving NFTs

Fractures were at the heart of the first season of Journeys. These dynamic NFTs evolved with each episode based on the choices and performances of the participants. Holders had the opportunity to transform their Fractures into Shadow Wolves. This transformation required burning the Fractures, symbolizing progression in the adventure and offering new advantages and traits for the players’ avatars.

Cool Score: A Measure of Community Engagement

The Cool Score is a points system introduced to reward the engagement and loyalty of NFT holders within Cooltopia. It is a cumulative score based on several criteria:

  • Ownership of Cool Cats, Cool Pets, and Shadow Wolves.
  • The duration of holding these assets in a wallet.
  • Participation in the Journeys missions and the evolution of Fractures.
  • The accumulation of rare digital items and the collection of special NFTs.
  • Involvement in community events.

The Cool Score evolves based on participants’ actions and allows holders to unlock exclusive rewards, such as early access to future collections, physical items, and IRL events.

The Journeys, Fractures, and Cool Score initiatives provided an immersive and gamified experience for holders of Cool Cats and Cool Pets. However, with the end of the utility of Fractures in May 2023 and the cessation of Cooltopia on July 27, 2023, the prospect of a third season seems increasingly unlikely. Although the dedicated channel for these initiatives (️|journeys) remains on Discord, the last official communication was dated November 2023.

Shadow Wolves: A Dive into the Darkness of Cooltopia (April 20, 2023)

The Shadow Wolves represent a significant evolution in the Cool Cats universe, introducing a darker and more competitive dimension within Cooltopia. These new characters are inspired by druidic creatures resembling Viking wolves, skilled in combat and specialized in exploring the geological fractures of Cooltopia to collect valuable materials. Their arrival greatly expands the possibilities for gameplay and interaction while introducing a new dynamic within the community.

Context and Role of the Shadow Wolves

The Shadow Wolves embody the darker side of Cooltopia, allowing holders to take on the role of a more aggressive and mystical character. These wolves are deeply rooted in nature and possess formidable combat skills, playing a key role in resource exploitation. They offer a new gameplay experience and introduce healthy competition among community members. As “Super Cool” members of the Cool Cats ecosystem, they enjoy privileged access to unique items, exclusive quests, and specific rewards.

Minting Process for the Shadow Wolves

The minting of Shadow Wolves took place from April 20 to May 19, 2023. To obtain a Shadow Wolf, holders had to burn a Cool Cats Fracture, an NFT acquired during the Journeys. This free minting mechanism, aside from the gas fees on the Ethereum network, allowed users to transform their Fracture into a Shadow Wolf that was immediately revealed. The process ensured a direct link between the rarity of the Fracture and that of the Shadow Wolf, adding a strategic dimension to the event.

Collection and Rarities

The Shadow Wolves collection consists of a maximum of 11,575 NFTs, although the total number of mints may be lower depending on the number of Fractures burned. Each Shadow Wolf is classified according to a rarity system similar to that of the Cool Cats, with levels ranging from Shadow 1 to Chaos 2. Additionally, one-of-one NFTs have been introduced into the collection, featuring legendary characters called The Elders and The Scholars, randomly assigned to certain Fractures regardless of their rarity.
